Common Windshield Wiper Problems

Common Windshield Wiper Problems

Windshield wipers often get little attention until it rains and we actually need them. I remember riding in a public vehicle and suddenly it rained. Initial instinct of the driver is to turn on his wipers because he can barely see the road. But to his dismay, it is moving back and forth but skipping and hopping with annoying sound. So what he did was to manually wipe the windshield with rag every once in a while. Oh I bet you are thinking how I got to my destination safely? Well, I don’t know, too but I am still thankful.

So, what could’ve gone wrong with the wipers? Let us enlighten ourselves with different windshield wiper problems.

  1. One direction water smear

This is common during winter time. But let us say it is summer time and you still see sign like this? You definitely need to replace your old wiper blades. Your blades are either old and hard or not the right size.

  1. Smearing in both directions

When this occurs, self-inspect your wipers for any of these problems; dirty windshield and/or wiper blade, below the level windshield wiper fluid, and shabby blades. Proper cleaning is the key.

  1. Chattering

Annoyed of persistent clicking brought by your wipers? Then time to check them. This means that there are some build up, grease, or wax. It could also be that your wipers are bent making it hard to remove the residues in your windshield.  Clean off the blades or adjust the arm using plier to solve the issue.

  1. Wiper arm not moving

The normal workaround is when you turn on the wipers, you should hear the motor run then the wiper arms should be moving. If this is not the case, pay attention to the base of the wiper arm. You will see a nut which holds the arm to the wiper transmission. This might be loose making the arm stationary.
